What to Know About the Greece Visa?
Some countries will not be required to obtain a Schengen
visa in order to visit Greece for any travel purposes under 90 days, but others
will need to apply for this visa to do so. In other words, it will depend upon
your nationality. Obtaining
the Greece Schengen visa is rather straightforward and well worth
the process as it will enable you free movement across much of Europe.
The countries that are a part of the entire Schengen Area
and thus offer free travel between borders are as follows:
Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania,
Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia,
Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
- FAQ: Are
all Schengen countries members of the European Union?
- Answer: Almost,
but not quite. Ireland and Cyprus are full European Union members but are
not a part of the Schengen Area at all. Additionally, Bulgaria, Romania,
and Croatia are EU members and enjoy some of the Schengen provisions but
not all. So just because you are an EU citizen does not mean that you
enjoy free travel throughout Greece and the Schengen countries without
restrictions.
Every Greek citizen does enjoy all benefits of travel in the
above countries.
Who Needs to Apply for the Greece Schengen Visa?
Naturally, the big question you have is going to be whether
or not you need to apply for the Greece Schengen visa. The most common
question we get about this are:
- Do non-US citizens living in the US need to apply for a Schengen visa?
- Even if you or your family has permanent or temporary residence permits enabling you to live in the United States or another country exempt from needing to apply for the Schengen visa, you will need to apply for the Schengen visa if you are a national of one of the below countries required to present the visa. The same holds true for those with a valid alien resident card.

How Long is the Schengen Visa Valid For?
Once you have the Schengen visa, you can enjoy traveling
throughout Greece and the other Schengen membership countries for up to
90 days within a 180-day period.
Travel Requirements and Required Documents for the Schengen Visa
In order to apply for your Schengen visa, you will need the
following documents:
- A
signed application form, which our team at iVisa.com can help you complete
quickly and effectively
- Two
recent passport-style photos for use with official passports
- A
passport from your country of citizenship and a copy of your passport's
data page where applicable (Indians, Pakistani's, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka for example, will need this) -- also,
note that passport validity will be checked! Your passport must be no
older than ten years and must be valid for three months following your
anticipated departure from Greece (or other Schengen state)
- Proof
of travel and medical certificate of insurance that offers a minimum
coverage value of 30,000 Euros
- A
personal letter outlining your reason for traveling to the area (ie for
family member visitation or entertainment) and a complete itinerary
- Proof
of accommodation for your stay
- Proof
you have the finances on hand to support yourself during an extended stay
(good examples of this include pay stubs showcasing your monthly or annual
salary or a bank account with the funds necessary to support you
throughout your stay. A bad example would be credit card statements)
- You
will sometimes be required to show a paid return airline ticket, others
can maybe list only their intended date of departure and proof of funds to
pay for that departure with an outlined contingency plan.
Diplomatic passport holders are still expected to complete
this same process.
Will I Need the Greece Schengen Visa if I Am Just
Transiting Through Greece?
If you are traveling through Greece or another Schengen Area
member state by bus, train, or car, you will need to apply for a visa in its
entirety.
If you are flying and will be in a Schengen Area for any
length of time -- yes, even if you remain in only one terminal -- you will need
what is called a Schengen Airport Transit Visa. The process for this is a bit
easier but still requires the completion of a visa application.
